The Contributors to the Krumnow Cookbook (1999)
Below you will find autobiographical information on the cooks and their
relatives who were kind enough to donate recipes for this project. I've tried
to include the author's exact words from their letters I received.
Blackwell, Joan – Joan is the oldest of 6 children of
Arthur and Louise Krumnow. She is a fun travel companion and good sister-in-law
of Phyllis Krumnow.
Haubert, Karen – My name is Karen Haubert (Krumnow).
My parents are Gustav and Dorothy Krumnow. I live in the country outside of
Fremont, Ohio. I enjoy living in the country working with my vegetable and flower
garden. We have an acre of land. My husband is Gary and he is in the Tool &
Die trade at Crescent Manufacturing
Company making all kinds of razor blades. We have been married for 22 years.
We have two children. Lisa, 20, is a junior in college, studying to be a medical
secretary. Charles, 17, is a senior in high school. He will be going to college
to study electricity. Both have summer jobs and keep very busy.
I work at Costume Holiday House
as a seamstress. I supervise 5 sewers. We are kept very busy.
Krumnow, Dana – Dana is married to Aaron Krumnow, the
son of Phyllis & Robert Krumnow. They live in the Rock Creek area just outside
of Waco. They have a new little girl named Brittany Jo who was born in April
1997. Dana is becoming a real good cook.
Krumnow, Dianne – I was once asked what my last name
was. I replied "Krum - now", stressing both syllables to make it clear.
Upon hearing my response, the gentleman asked, "What were you before?"
Anyway, I've always been a Krumnow. My father was Ervin, one of the seven sons
of Albert and Bertha (Butzin) Krumnow. I graduated from Capital University in
Columbus, Ohio. I moved from my hometown, Elmore in northwestern Ohio to Marion
in Central Ohio to begin teaching in Marion City Schools. I have been teaching
third grade there for 22 years and plan to teach third grade until I get it
right. I received my masters degree from Ohio State University. I've recently
become the owner of my own marketing company. Both teaching and running a business
keep me busy, but I do find time to draw, do cross stitch, and play the accordion
and guitar. I also have a collection of angels that I started at the age of
9 or ten.
Krumnow,
Edgar & Johnnie – Edgar was born on November 24, 1914 in
Otto, Texas to Oscar Hugo Krumnow and Katie (Wetzel) Krumnow. Both are deceased
and buried in Perry Cemetery in Perry, Texas. Married Johnnie Hobclay on July

INFAMY. His birth was proclaimed by the evening mail train as it pulled out
of the little Northwest Ohio flatland village of Elmore.

baking and dog food industries, foreman in a pizza crust factory, custodian
in a public school system, Chapter President of a union, Telemarketing manager,
Deconner in the nuclear power industry, public speaker, and Business Manager
for a Funeral Home. He is a writer also. (freelance - That means he hasn't been
paid.!?)
He is divorced, has a grown son, Bruce, and daughter, Kim. He also has a very
special lady, C.J., in his life.
Krumnow,
May – I am a Krumnow thru marriage. I was a Lemke. I met Julius
by a blind date. We dated for 2 years, and got married on June 8, 1938. We have
six children, fourteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren. All of the
grandchildren have graduated high school and the first great grandchild graduated
in 1997. Julius was born March 22, 1913 and passed away January 15, 1992. I
was born January 24, 1928. (Do I have anyone there on my date?)
I like to crochet, play cards and nature shows on T.V. The best times are when
our families all get together at reunions and other times. We always have a
good time.
Editorial Note: May Krumnow also sent Randy & I have a lovely dish towel
when we started the cookbook project and it still hangs proudly in our kitchen.
May Krumnow passed away in 2006
Krumnow,
Robert A. and Phyllis – We met in the summer of 1960. My family
moved from Waco to Caron Dr. in Robinson, TX. Just down the road from Robert’s
family Aurthur and Louise Krumnow. We started dating that year which was held
at the old Otto school house. We married on May 31, 1962. Built our 1st house
in 1963 in Robinson. In July of 1965, Dana Lynn was born. In May of 1968 was
when our twins were born. Roger Allen & Ronald Arthur lived 2 days. Then
in Jan 16, 1972, Aaron Goodson was born. Then to our surprise, in Oct of 1973,
we had Darrell Wayne.
Robert has always been a home builder. He learned this trade from his dad. He
is also a very good craftsman with wood. I enjoy sewing, cooking and keeping
our grandkids. We have 4 boys and 1 girl.
The Krumnow reunions have always been a big part of our lives. Robert has never
missed any.
Krumnow,
Ruth M. – As to how I am a Krumnow. I was married to one of the
twin sons of Albert and Bertha Krumnow, Ervin by name. He passed away 18 years
ago after surgery for a malignant brain tumor. We had two children.
David is 46, works for Chrysler Corp. and is married to Carole. They have 2
daughters. Angela, 18, graduated this year and is working at Pharm in Bowling
Green and plans on taking up Physical Therapy and Nursing next year. Janice
is 16 and a sophomore, one time she's going to be a Vet, the next a Lawyer,
so who knows. Carole works at the Drug store.
Dianne our daughter is an Elementary Education teacher in Marion, Ohio. She
is beginning her 23rd year of teaching at the same school. Not married. She
owns her own home in a housing complex in the country, just south of Marion.
I'm 69. I operated my own Beauty Salon for 20 years. I had to retire because
of severe osteo-arthritis. Don't get around very good, but am always busy nevertheless.
I do a lot of church work. Serve on Church Council on the board of education,
and on the Stewardship and Evangelism committee. I also serve as a Mission Growth
representative for our circle on the board. Am a Rachel Circle Rep, also Rep
for our church for Wernbe Children’s' Home. I fold the weekly church bulletins
and put the Parish Monthly newsletter together after it's off of the press.
Do a lot of phoning for the Pastor. Guess that's about it for the Church.
My favorite hobby is crocheting. Guess I sorta like to boast a little about
having made 181 large afghans. Have 4 to make before Xmas. Might make it to
200 if I last that long. I also have made Baby afghans, sweaters of all kinds,
vests, pillows, hanger covers, dish cloths, pot holders, towel toppers, you
name it and I guess I've made it. I also love to make things with needlepoint
on plastic canvas. I have made over 100 doorstops of all kinds from barns, butter
churns, dogs, cats, cows, college sports emblems, tote bags, and about anything
you can find in that, I've done it.
Since I can't do much walking I do get a lot accomplished having to sit a lot.
I also like to cook and my body shows it. Bill said I should be sure and get
my German Baked Bean recipe off to you. He and Jim were quite excited about
their trip to Riesel and certainly felt you folks were very gracious and showed
them a good time and made them feel very much at home. We had our reunion yesterday
and they showed the videos and told all about their most enjoyable visit.

on how beautiful things are. I like music and creating things, especially from
the garden. I also sing in the Hayes V.M. Church choir.

like cookbooks, on computers.
Sager,
Vera – When we try recipes at our house the whole family comments
on it and we tell whoever made it what we do and don’t like about it.
The next time the recipe is made we change it. Glenn and I have even gotten
Michael and Wendy to take recipes and change anything they think would taste
better or different. We used to have to watch Michael though, he likes hot (very
hot) things.
I belong to Julius and May (Lemke) Krumnow. I'm the fourth one in the family (also known as the oldest of the young half of the family as there are 10.5 years between Lester and me).
Glenn and I have been married for 38 years. Glenn is a retired sheet metal worker, and I am the office clerk for American Welding and Tank in Fremont, OH.
We live in the country between Toledo and Port Clinton, near Lake Erie and the Islands.
We have two grown children: Michael, 34 and Wendy, 31. Both have a great appreciation for the art of cooking because of the experimentation that we encouraged them to with cooking when they were younger.
Michael is a carpenter in northwest Ohio, and is married with two boys ages 2 and 4 (Jaxon and Konnor respectively). He enjoys camping and anything outdoors.
Wendy graduated from Bowling Green State University in 2000 and is currently working part-time as an administrative assistant. She is also married and has a two-year-old named Alexander. She enjoys cooking, home improvements and exercising.
